There are a lot of ways to do a podcast. The easieset podcast is to use the sound recorder program located in START/Programs/Accessories/Entertainment. You can also create a podcast that contains only audio using a program like Audacity. These would be great in a foreign language class where the students can listen to the vocabulary and pronunciation of words and don't need a visual reference. I prefer to record video and audio = screencasting. A great online screen-casting (program that captures images from your computer screen) is Screencast-o-matic. Here's a short demo video on how it works (basically a screencast on how to make a screencast):
If you follow the link above to Screencast-o-matic's site, you will see they have both a free version and a Pro version. In the free version you are limited to 15 minute recordings and require you to download the video to your computer which you could upload to a website later. The Pro version (which of course costs money) allows for online storage on their site and basically gives you a channel to show your videos from similar to YouTube. However, YouTube is accessible on most cell phones and even allows for downloads on iPhones which the others do not.
The Promethean ActivInspire software also allows for screen capture and recording! Check out Promethean Planet for tutorials.
If you have an iPad, check out Educreations and ScreenChomp for great screencasting software.
How could podcasting help you catch up students who have been absent? Perhaps a screencast on your Blackboard page would help with complicated mathematics or specific assignments?
You could (like it says) screen-cast a lesson for your absent students (especially if you knew a ton were going to be absent---like this week!). Also an idea for making sure a sub teaches the lesson correctly (like in math!). You could do the lesson and the sub could just play it for the class and pause to field questions. Certainly would take time to prep, but might avoid being days behind?? I haven't ever used either...yet.

You can also use your ActivInspire software to record and save a Promethean Lesson you teach. It records the flipchart and your voice.
ReplyDeleteIt says to check out Educreations if you have an Ipad. Is this only if you have one for your classroom though?
