The National Center for Family Literacy's website, “Wonderopolis,” is a site containing daily articles that are educational and aimed at kids. The short daily “wonders” and additional reading material available make for addictive reading for kids and grown-ups, too! For example, "How Does an Eraser Work?" doesn't just explain how erasers work — did you know they usually contain vegetable oil? — but also reveals how people removed pencil marks before Englishman Edward Naime invented the eraser in 1770. (They used rolled-up pieces of bread.) The wonder/question is posed and you simply click "read more" to find the answer and many related resources.
With Promethean’s newest ActivInspire software update, you can embed this web-feed in to a flipchart, and a new wonder will appear daily. (How to download the new ActivInspire software? Watch future blog posts...)
I have embedded the feed at the bottom of this blog, too.... We'll see if it updates daily. :o)
You could use this to put onto your Blackboard or your Blog for your classroom..if it will work with that. Will it work with Blackboard?

Amy - You can link the site in Blackboard and/or the Blog.
DeleteI like that you can scroll back to previous entries if you want to. It might be good to have a list of "good" ones that you didn't use in case the one on a particular day isn't so appropriate. Neat!

I love Amy's idea about keeping track of especially good links. You may find ones that are wonderful for the core curriculum.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea for those " fast finishers", too! I like the idea of embedding it into your blackboard or even a flipchart...will have to try it soon.
